WITNESS
--UNITY
WILDCATS PLAYERS DOMINATE EARLY SEASON HIGH SCHOOL GAMES--
Syracuse,
New York - (12/28/11) - Highlights from the early season's high school
games have been plentiful for the Unity Wildcats. With the season still
in its early stages, stat sheets across the region are being filled up
with the exploits of myriad Unity Wildcats. Some early highlights:
Thousand Islands
(6-0; Ranked 11th in State Class C): Led by Kristin McGraw's sharp
shooting and tenacious floor game, the Vikings are off to a perfect
start. McGraw is averaging 18ppg and the Vikings are a legitimate
threat to take top Section 3 honors come February.
Jamesville-Dewitt (5-0;
Ranked 14th in State Class A): Kayleigh Cavanaugh
knew she had to step up her
game when fellow Wildcat Caitlin Cariseo went down with an ACL injury
this past summer. Thus far, KayCav has done just that. Leading the Red
Rams in both scoring and assists, she's shown grace and poise as J-D
has come out of the gate winning its first five games, including a
gritty road win over Class A rival Cortland. With the help of fellow
UCat Stephanie
Mannion, the Red Rams have their eyes on a long elusive Sectional Title.
Westhill (7-0;
Ranked 6th in State Class B):
Led by a trio of Unity Wildcats, the Westhill Warriors are off and
running under the guidance of Hall of Fame Coach Sue Ludwig. Wildcats
Anna Ross, Sam Peebles and Maggie Tripodi's combined 40ppg are the main
reason that Westhill is undefeated. Class B is loaded this year and the
Warriors will have to consistently play at their best to ward off a
bevy of Section 3 Title contenders.
Bishop Grimes
(6-0;
Ranked 14th in State Class B): Last year was a transitional year for
the Lady Cobras as they moved from Class C to Class B. With a year of
experience under their belts, the Lady Cobras are on the rise! Led by
another trio of UCats (and Unity Coach Carlee Cassidy), Grimes is off
to a perfect start. Amelia Heiselman began the season with 28 threes in
four games and has now been hounded by box-and-one defenses the last
two games as a result. Cue UCats Jordan Vaught and Tina Hoag. Both have
stepped up to show opponents that blanketing Heiselman is not a recipe
for success. Don't sleep on the Lady Cobras!
Oriskany (4-1; Ranked
9th in State Class D): After an opening night loss, the Redskins have
reeled off four straight wins and moved into the top 10 in Class D.
UCat Christina Graziadei leads the way averaging a double-double at
16.2ppg and 11.1 rpg.
Cortland (6-1;
Ranked 18th in State Class A): Their only blemish in the early going is
a 43-39 knock-down, drag-out loss to Jamesville-Dewitt in early
December. Veteran UCat and Lemoyne signee Maggie Brown has broad
shoulders and she uses them every night to pick up her teammates and
bring them together to victory. Averaging an otherworldly 29ppg and
16rpg, Brown is having one of the finest Senior seasons in CNY history.
Fayetteville-Manlius
(6-1; Ranked 18th in State Class AA): Three
seems to be the magic number for the Wildcats as another trio of
Wildcats have pushed the Hornets to an almost perfect record through
seven games. Seniors Alexis Rios and Kiley Shoemaker provide leadership
and talent, while Lauren Getman delivers exceptional inside-out play.
With back-to-back wins over AA rival Liverpool already in the hopper,
the Hornets are looking forward to their early January showdown with
Cicero North Syracuse.
Jordan-Elbridge
(4-1): Led by Holy Cross bound UCat Molly Hourigan, the Eagles are a
blue collar crew who bring their hardnosed focus to every game.
Hourigan's unassuming, classy manor belies a ferocious competitive
spirit that produces a triple-double in almost every contest. Boasting
an impressive road win over AA Nottingham, the Eagles are not to be
taken lightly by any opponent as they contend for a Class B Sectional
Title.
Cicero-North Syracuse
(4-2; Ranked 1st in State Class AA):
The Northstars record is deceiving. Both losses came at the hands of
nationally ranked teams at the Phoenix TOC. The two losses were
preceded by two wins against the #6 and #22 teams in the country. CNS
is generally regarded as the top team in CNY and for good reason. In
addition to nationally recognized B. Stewart, the Northstars feature
another trio of Unity Wildcats: Abbey Timpano, Cara Gannett and Hannah
Nichols. CNS' overall talent is so strong they would be the frontrunner
to win Class AA Sectionals even without Stewart.
New Hartford
(6-1; Ranked 9th in State Class A): Super-Soph Amy Evans has been a key
to New Hartford's fast start to the 2011-12 season. Averaging in double
figures, Evans' hard work in the off season has clearly paid off as she
has stepped forward in a big way for the Spartans. Along with J-D and
Cortland, New Hartford has to be considered one of the favorites to
take the Class A Section 3 Title.
Skaneateles
(5-3): Another team with a deceiving record. Led by yet another trio of
Unity Wildcats, the Lakers are a young squad whose leading scorer is
Freshman UCat Elizabeth Lane. Lane is complemented in the middle by 6-1
Sophomore Joanna Dobrovosky and 6-0 Junior Mary Buck. Skaneateles has
endured one of the toughest first half schedules in the area and looks
to improve its W-L ledger in coming weeks.
West Genesee
(6-2): After racing to a 6-0 record, the WG Wildcats have come down to
earth with hard fought losses to Westhill and Skaneateles.
Sophomore UCat Melissa Fumano has been nothing less than a revelation
for West Genny. Fumano is averaging more than 16ppg while displaying
one of the all-around best inside-out games in CNY. Upcoming games with
some of Class AA's top teams will indicate just how far West Genesee
can go through Sectionals this year.
Working to Help Their Teams Into Contention:
Shea Foster
(Can) - Canastota is off to a rough start but by no fault of Foster.
Shea is averaging 22ppg and 9rpg leading the Raiders in both
categories. Expect the Raiders to show marked improvement as the season
progresses.
Ashlynn Palmitesso
(Ful) - Carrying on one of the most distinguished careers in Fulton
history, Palmitesso fits every definition of the word "leader" for her
improving squad. Averaging over 17ppg, she never hangs her head and
always picks up her teammates.
Kaitlin Antelmi (Chit) -
Chittenango was thin when the season started and the loss of scoring
point guard Sierra Shafer didn't help matters. Nonetheless, Antelmi has
continued her workmanlike approach and boasts 13ppg and 9rpg for her
Chittenango Bears.
Maggie Carpenter
(Caz) - The Lakers have come up on the short end of a number of tight
games to start the season. But with the loss of three starters, the
Lakers were expected to take awhile before they got their sea legs.
Carpenter is yet another Wildcat averaging a double-double every game
and the Lakers hope to surprise in the second half.
Maria Lapertosa
- (Wbro) - It hasn't taken this Freshman too much time to get
comfortable in the starting lineup for perennial Class A power
Whitesboro. Lapertosa is averaging almost 11ppg for the Warriors.
Another team off to a tough start, don't be surprised to see Whitesboro
making some noise come Sectionals.
Shauntesha Bryant
(Cor) and Hope Defazio (Bvl) - Both
are contributing on veteran AA squads that are off to strong starts.
Sam Roberts
(CNS) - The CNS varsity is loaded and Roberts made the decision to play
with the junior varsity squad and is tearing it up for the CNS
youngsters!
Natalie Nardella
(CBA) - Much like CNS, CBA has a veteran varsity squad. Nardella is
honing her craft with the CBA junior varsity, leading them in most
statistical categories.
Marissa Moreman
(Cor) - Continues her rehabilitation and recovery from a torn ACL. Hope
to see you on the court before the end of the season Marissa!!
Coach
Kramer
(Ond) - After a slow beginning, Coach Kramer's Oneida squad has strung
together back-to-back wins for the first time in more than a year. The
Oneida team mirrors its coach's intense determination and more wins
look to be on the horizon for this young squad.
